Radical Republicans
The Radical Republicans were the most important group of political figures from the 1850s through the 1870s. Their views on slavery, the War, the sectional conflict, and Reconstruction have become the standard establishment views of the period. Both "conservative" and progressive historians regurgitate their positions as accepted "facts" of the sectional conflict, War, and Reconstruction. This makes understanding what they said a vital part of not only American history but modern American politics. This course provides a deeper understanding of the Radical Republicans and their impact on the United States.
